WILLIE MULLINS ANNONCE LA COULEUR

Avant le coup, il était difficile de situer les deux pensionnaires de Willie Mullins dans le Prix La Barka (Gr2) : Shaneshill (King’s Theatre) restait sur de mauvaises sorties et Open Eagle (Montjeu) avait plusieurs marches à franchir d’un coup dans ce Gr2. Mais à l’image d’un Aidan O’Brien, Willie Mullins sait très bien ce qu’il fait.

Open Eagle n’a pas pu se montrer dangereux, mais Shaneshill, parfaitement monté par Ruby Walsh, s’est imposé quasiment de bout en bout. Le jockey irlandais a monté une course à la française, peu rythmée, laissant respirer son cheval dans le dernier tournant, et parvenant à la fin à revenir sur L’Ami Serge (King’s Theatre). Ce dernier, entraîné par Nicky Henderson, a été brillant à l’arrière-garde. En tête au saut de la dernière haie, il n’a pas pu résister à l’attaque de Shaneshill, mais n’a pas été inquiété par la bonne fin de course de Device (Poliglote). Un podium irlandais, anglais et français, composé des champions trainers irlandais, anglais et français… Joli.

Shaneshill sur la bonne voie. Pour la sixième année consécutive, le Prix La Barka est remporté par un étranger. Quatre de ces succès sont signés Willie Mullins et pourtant, cette année, il n’avait pas de Thousand Stars (Grey Risk) ou d’Un de Sceaux (Denham Red) au départ… Outre-Manche, Shaneshill n’a pas réussi à s’illustrer dans la catégorie des meilleurs hurdlers de tenue, une filière qui n’a pourtant pas eu de vrais leaders durant la saison 2016-2017. Il venait de conclure avant-dernier du Champion Stayers Hurdle (Gr1) de Punchestown, et il était avant cela tombé dans le Stayers Hurdle (Gr1) de Punchestown, après une victoire de Gr2 à Gowran. Mais la performance permettant de mieux saisir le niveau potentiel de Shaneshill, c’est sa deuxième place, pour une demi-longueur, dans le RSA Chase 2016 (Gr1) de Cheltenham. Lorsqu’il est bien, c’est un bon cheval, sans être un crack. Willie Mullins nous a dit : « J’ai toujours pensé que Shaneshill était bon. Il n’est pas facile à entraîner. Shaneshill avait très bien gagné dans un Gr2 à Gowran durant l’hiver et ses deux sorties suivantes ont été décevantes. Nous avons essayé de faire les choses différemment avec lui et, depuis, nous sommes revenus à nos habitudes le matin. Cela semble marcher mieux. Il y a un an, il s’était classé deuxième du RSA Chase. Peut-être qu’il revient à son meilleur niveau en ce moment. Nous allons revenir avec lui dans trois semaines pour la Grande Course de Haies d’Auteuil (Gr1). C’est le plan. Si un cheval court bien dans cette préparatoire, il doit revenir pour la belle trois semaines plus tard, et c’est le cas. Je suis content d’avoir un cheval qui sera compétitif dans le Gr1. »

Une victoire un peu surprise. Shaneshill s’est montré courageux et son jockey Ruby Walsh lui a laissé une chance dans le tournant, quitte à devoir être battu. Willie Mullins était heureux de la victoire de son pensionnaire, et un peu surpris, car, au bout de la ligne d’en face, il n’y croyait plus. Il nous a expliqué : « Ruby pensait qu’il n’allait pas y avoir beaucoup de train et il s’est dévoué pour aller devant. Le cheval a fait une erreur à quatre haies de la fin et je pensais à ce moment que c’était fini. Ruby a laissé Shaneshill respirer dans le tournant. À ce moment-là, j’espérais simplement que le cheval puisse garder une place dans les trois premiers. Mais, à la dernière haie, il s’est montré volontaire et il avait encore quelques ressources. C’est sympa d’avoir un gagnant dans cette belle journée, et cela d’autant plus que ce n’était pas gagné dans le dernier tournant ! »

Concernant Open Eagle, neuvième, l’entraîneur irlandais a dit : « Il faudrait que j’en discute avec Paul Townend. Mais Open Eagle n’a pas aimé sauter aujourd’hui. Peut-être qu’il y a autre chose… Je pense que c’est un bon sauteur, bien meilleur que ce qu’il a montré cet après-midi. Nous allons peut-être découvrir que quelque chose ne va pas dans les prochains jours, nous verrons bien. Mais je suis déçu, car je pensais qu’il aurait vraiment pu faire mieux sur ce type de parcours aujourd’hui. »

Les atouts Mullins dans trois semaines. Si Shaneshill devait revenir dans la Grande Course de Haies d’Auteuil, il n’est pas certain que Willie Mullins ait d’autres pensionnaires au départ suite à la déception causée par Open Eagle. Footpad (Creachadoir) était envisagé pour Auteuil après Cheltenham, mais il ne sera pas présent. Willie Mullins a fait le point sur sa possible équipe pour Auteuil dans trois semaines : « Nous avons décidé de laisser Footpad à la maison. Je pense qu’il sera un très bon novice chaser la saison prochaine. J’ai pensé qu’il serait mieux de lui offrir des vacances et de le reprendre sur le steeple lors de la prochaine saison. Pravalaguna (Great Pretender) court dans le Prix d’Arles (L) demain [lire dimanche, NDLR]. Nous verrons selon sa performance et selon les options qui s’offriront à elle. Bapaume (Turtle Bowl) qui a gagné le Gr1 à Punchestown est en préparation pour le Prix Alain du Breil (Gr1). Il a eu une longue saison. C’est un cheval dur, mais j’ai pensé qu’il n’avait pas besoin de venir aujourd’hui. Il aurait été positif de lui donner une expérience, mais je préfère tenter de l’amener à Auteuil sans connaissance du terrain pour lui donner une chance, car il a eu une saison difficile. »

L’Ami Serge pourrait revenir. Cheval doté de beaucoup de fond, ayant fait ses classes à Auteuil dans sa jeunesse, et performant en terrain souple, L’Ami Serge avait une belle chance dans ce Prix La Barka et il s’est très bien comporté. Son jockey, Daryl Jacob, risque cependant d’avoir très mal aux bras dimanche matin, car le cheval a été très brillant, et son jockey a préféré le laisser attendre plutôt que d’imprimer le train. Son entraîneur, Nicky Henderson, nous a dit : « Il avait déjà couru en France quand c’était un jeune cheval [sous l’entraînement de Guillaume Macaire, NDLR]. Les obstacles ici sont faits pour lui et il a bien sauté. Le cheval a tiré pendant le parcours sans prendre le commandement, restant calé à gauche, car il a tendance à se montrer gaucher. Il n’a jamais couru plus long qu’aujourd’hui et aller sur plus long à l’occasion de la Grande Course de Haies (Gr1) n’a jamais été au programme. Mais il a fini dans les trois premiers, donc nous allons y réfléchir. Blue Dragon semble être la principale opposition et on sait qu’il tient la distance. »

Device, mention bien. Device est battu… Mais le représentant de Magalen Bryant évoluait pour la première fois sur aussi long et son principal test ce samedi consistait à tenir. Le pensionnaire de Guillaume Macaire a tracé un bon bout pour finir, même si le rythme peu élevé ne permet pas d’être certain à 100 % sur sa tenue dans la prochaine Grande Course de Haies d’Auteuil. Sa troisième place est cependant encourageante et Device reste, avec son compagnon d’entraînement Blue Dragon, le cheval à battre dans le prochain Gr1. Guillaume Macaire nous a dit : « Nous n’avons pas couru le Prix Léon Rambaud (Gr2) pour aller sur ce Prix La Barka (Gr2) et pouvoir le tester sur une distance plus longue. Mais ils ont fait 2.000m de course… Dans la Grande Course de Haies, il y aura plus de monde pour faire le train, ce qui sera mieux pour lui. »

Le coup de deux de King’s Theatre. Les deux premiers de l’édition 2017 du Prix La Barka sont issus de King’s Theatre (Sadler’s Wells), aujourd’hui disparu, et qui a été tête de liste des pères de sauteurs outre-Manche. Le croisement de cet étalon sur une jument descendant de Mill a donné Shaneshill et Great Pretender, le seul fils de King’s Theatre à faire la monte en France, au haras de la Hêtraie. King’s Theatre avait notamment gagné les King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (devant Whitte Muzzle, deuxième de l’Arc d’Urban Sea) après avoir pris la deuxième place des Derbys d’Irlande et d’Epsom (Grs1).

Le frère d’un placé de l’Ascot Gold Cup. Élevé par Declan Johnson en Irlande, Shaneshill a été acheté 33.000 € chez Goffs, alors qu’il était foal. Il est le dernier produit de Darabaka (Doyoun), un élève de Son Altesse l’Aga Khan. Cette dernière a donné trois black-types, dont Far Cry (Pharly), lauréat du Doncaster Cup (Gr3) et deuxième de l’Ascot Gold Cup (Gr1). Il était ce jour-là battu d’une tête par le champion stayer Kayf Tara (Sadler’s Wells) qui est depuis devenu un grand étalon d’obstacle. Far Cry s’est également classé deuxième du Bonusprint Bula Hurdle (Gr2) à Cheltenham. Autre produit de Darabaka, Captainofthefleet (Refuse to Bend) est placé de Gr3 handicap sur les haies de Cork. Darabaka est par ailleurs la deuxième mère de Grandeur (Verglas), doublé lauréat de Listed sur 2.000m outre-Manche et deuxième de l’Hollywood Derby (Gr1). Cette souche princière est notamment celle de Darjina (Zamindar) et d’Almanzor (Wootton Bassett).
