Les deux poulains qui effectuaient leur rentrée dans ce Prix Bertrand du Breuil Longines (Gr3) ont dominé leurs rivaux. Il faut dire que ce n’était autre que Taareef (Kitten’s Joy) et Zelzal (Sea the Stars), deux des meilleurs 3ans de Jean-Claude Rouget en 2016. Taareef a devancé son compagnon d’entraînement, qui avait beaucoup de terrain à combler dans la ligne droite.

Taareef, qui rendait deux kilos à ses adversaires, a galopé derrière Black Max (Fuissé), l’animateur, détaché du reste du lot, comme c’est son habitude. Actionné à environ 200m du but, le poulain du cheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum a placé une très belle accélération avant de venir chercher l’appui du rail. Il l’emporte d’une longueur trois quarts devant Zelzal, auteur d’une très bonne fin de course. Siyoushake (Siyouni) est troisième.

Taareef en route vers une belle saison. Taareef a signé le record de la course, puisqu’il a bouclé le parcours en 1’34’’57. Spirito del Vento (Indian  Ridge), entraîné par Jean-Marc Béguigné détenait le record jusque-là, en 1’34’’60. Lauréat du Qatar Prix Daniel Wildenstein (Gr2) en fin d’année de 3ans, Taareef s’était aussi offert le Prix Daphnis (Gr3) après s’être classé deuxième du Prix de Fontainebleau (Gr3) de Dicton (Lawman). Jean-Claude Rouget a expliqué : « Le déroulement de la course a eu pour conséquence un meilleur parcours pour  le cheval de Ioritz [Taareef, ndlr]. Si nous avions su que nous aurions un parcours comme celui-là, nous aurions monté Zelzal plus près. D’ailleurs, il y a vraiment eu match entre les deux, mais ils se seraient peut-être donné une course dure tous les deux. Les deux jockeys ont été gentils avec leurs chevaux. Pour moi, ce n’est pas grave que Zelzal soit battu aujourd’hui, il va en gagner d’autre, et Taareef est un bon cheval, ce n’est pas nouveau. Il s’agit de son troisième Groupe. C’est un cheval que j’ai tenu à garder car son propriétaire aime rentrer les chevaux au haras à 3ans ou les envoyer à Dubaï. Il peut aussi aller sur 2.000m, cela lui ouvre d’autres opportunités. J’attendais de les voir courir pour faire des projets. »

Zelzal a encore l’année devant lui. Respecté par son jockey, Zelzal est venu fort en pleine piste et se classe bon deuxième. Rupert Pritchard-Gordon nous a confié : « Zelzal court très bien. Nous voulions lui donner une bonne course de rentrée et c’est le cas. Si on le monte plus près, il peut être un peu allant. Il a donc attendu et est revenu faire un bon effort. Nous sommes vraiment satisfaits de sa course, l’année est longue. » Zelzal avait remporté le Prix Jean Prat (Gr1) l’an dernier, avant de conclure son année de 3ans sur une troisième place dans le Qatar Prix du Moulin de Longchamp remporté par Vadamos (Monsun). Zelzal est engagé dans les Qatar Sussex Stakes (Gr1, le 2 août à Goodwood) et cela pourrait être une option pour lui.

Siyoushake se rachète. Siyoushake, calme au rond de présentation contrairement à Taareef et Zelzal qui étaient plutôt frais, monte sur le podium de ce Prix Bertrand du Breuil Longines (Gr3). Elle est allée à la poursuite des deux premiers et a pris soigneusement la troisième place de l’épreuve. Son entraîneur, Freddy Head, était ravi : « Elle fait une course formidable. L’autre jour [10e dans le Prix du Muguet, Gr2, ndlr], elle a eu un jour sans, je n’explique pas cette performance. Elle rendait deux kilos à Zelzal, deuxième. Elle a vraiment livré une grande course aujourd’hui. » Siyoushake avait en effet déçu pour sa rentrée, dans le Prix du Muguet (Gr2), alors qu’elle restait sur une victoire dans le Prix Perth (Gr3) en fin d’année.

Black Max vers un raccourcissement de distance. Black Max, qui est un cheval très délicat, se classe quatrième. Très allant, il a pris rapidement les commandes de l’épreuve, sans que Pierre-Charles Boudot ne puisse vraiment le reprendre. Henri-Alex Pantall, entraîneur de Black Max, a dit : « C’est un cheval qui est toujours très tendu. Il est bien mieux sur 1.400m mais il n’y a pas de programme pour lui sur cette distance. Il est fort possible que l’on tente de le raccourcir dans une épreuve comme le Larc Prix Maurice de Gheest. » Il se présentait ici après une cinquième place dans le Prix de Montretout (L), où il avait été gêné. À 3ans, Black Max a terminé deuxième du Prix de Saint-Patrick (L) de Ghaaly (Tamayuz).

Le meilleur Kitten’s Joy vu en France. Né aux États-Unis, Taareef a été acheté 675.000 $ en septembre 2014, à Keeneland, par Shadwell. Il est à ce jour le seul gagnant de Groupe en France de son père, Kitten’s Joy (El Prado). Ce dernier est considéré comme l’un des meilleurs étalons de gazon outre-Atlantique. En Europe, son porte drapeau est Hawkbill (Eclipse Stakes, Gr1). Sa mère, Sacred Feather (Carson City), a gagné cinq courses aux États-Unis. Marianna’s Girl (Dewan), la deuxième mère, est lauréate de Gr3 aux États-Unis et a donné cinq black types. Sous la troisième mère de Taareef, Marianna Trench (Pago Pago), on retrouve le nom de Bold Style (Bold Commander), gagnant de Gr2 à Belmont Park.
