LA PLUS BELLE DE FIRST SITTING ET L’OMBRE D’ALMANZOR

First Sitting (Dansili) a remporté le Prix Gontaut-Biron – Hong Kong Jockey Club (Gr3), devant le valeureux Garlingari (Linngari) ; Zafiro (Sageburg), le leader d’Almanzor (Wootton Bassett), conserve la troisième place… En nous levant ce matin, nous ne pensions pas écrire cela. Le gagnant est le gagnant, mais son entraîneur, Chris Wall, est lui-même philosophe, avouant vite qu’il sait très bien que l’on parlera plus d’Almanzor que de son cheval. Car Almanzor était évidemment la grande attraction de la course. Pas revu depuis les Champion Stakes 2016 (Gr1), le champion effectuait une rentrée très attendue dans ce Prix Gontaut-Biron… Presque inespérée quelque part, après le virus ayant touché le barn de Jean-Claude Rouget et d’autres pépins de santé.

Imbattable aux ratings. Aux ratings, Almanzor était imbattable dans ce Gr3, surtout avec un engagement parfait. En prenant en compte les différents éléments évoqués ci-dessus, il avait le droit d’être battu. Mais il lui fallait tout de même montrer quelque chose. Nous n’avons vu que son ombre. Vu à l’arrière-garde, il paraissait avoir du gaz à l’entrée de la ligne droite, Christophe Soumillon n’ayant pas bougé. Mais lorsque le jockey lui a demandé de prononcer son effort, Almanzor est resté là, luttant pour ne pas être dernier.

De la déception, mais aussi de la tristesse : un champion se respecte. Voir Almanzor incapable d’accélérer dans la ligne droite, concluant dernier dead-heat avec Alignement (Pivotal), provoque un pincement un cœur. Le même qui a dû saisir les fans d’athlétisme lors de la dernière course d’Usain Bolt il y a quelques jours à Londres, où son corps a dit stop. L’entourage d’Almanzor décidera dans les semaines à venir s’il faut dire stop. Jean-Claude Rouget l’a en tout cas confirmé : le Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe est inenvisageable.

Mission impossible. Jean-Claude Rouget a fait le point avec la presse après le Prix Guillaume d’Ornano – Haras du Logis Saint-Germain (Gr2), où Brametot  (Rajsaman) a déçu. « Je me suis levé ce matin, et je ne sentais pas cette journée. J’avais raison… » Après quarante ans de métier, l’entraîneur relativise, souligne-t-il, mais on sent malgré tout une certaine émotion.

Revoir Almanzor en piste avait déjà quelque chose d’inespéré, après des rentrées retardées : impasse sur le Prix d’Ispahan (Gr1), puis sur Royal Ascot et York… Le reverra-t-on encore ? La décision n’est pas encore prise mais les paroles de l’entraîneur n’engagent pas à l’optimisme. Jean-Claude Rouget explique : « C’est impossible de ramener le cheval, après dix mois d’arrêt. Il est monté à un niveau tellement haut à 3ans qu’il est compliqué de le retrouver l’année suivante. On compare souvent les chevaux à des voitures de course. C’est faux. Quand le moteur d’une voiture est fatigué, on le change. Cela ne marche pas avec les chevaux. Il a fait beaucoup d’efforts l’an passé, il a enfilé les courses à un tel niveau… Il faut garder en mémoire sa course à Leopardstown [les Irish Champion Stakes, ndlr], où il a battu le plus beau lot de chevaux que j’aie jamais vu. Pour l’instant, il n’y a pas de plan. Il faudra que l’ensemble des associés sur le cheval en parlent. »

Christophe Soumillon a de son côté analysé au micro d’Equidia, en revenant aux balances : «  Il n’est pas blessé. Je suis venu en dedans, c’est un peu la façon dont il a travaillé ici pendant quelques semaines. Je n’allais pas pouvoir venir en dehors car je voyais bien que, devant, ils allaient facilement. J’ai voulu gagner quelques longueurs en dedans mais il n’a jamais réagi comme il le faisait habituellement. Je crois qu’il a besoin de compétition, et je pense encore beaucoup… »

La plus belle de First Sitting. Les trois premiers au départ sont les trois premiers à l’arrivée. First Sitting, placé derrière Zafiro, s’est montré dur jusqu’au bout pour résister à l’attaque de Garlingari, troisième dans le parcours. First Sitting, gagnant auparavant de Listed, décroche sa plus belle victoire. Il venait de se classer troisième de La Coupe Longines (Gr3), derrière Robin of Navan (American Post) et Garlingari, qui faisait alors une rentrée. Etonnamment, ce fils de Dansili issu d’une famille américaine préfère les terrains un peu assouplis, comme nous l’a dit Chris Wall : « Il a beaucoup progressé depuis l’an dernier et sa course à Saint-Cloud [deuxième du Prix du Pont-Neuf (L), ndlr]. La dernière fois, à Chantilly, le terrain était trop rapide pour lui. Il montre aujourd’hui ce dont il est capable. Avant le coup, il y avait Almanzor à battre, d’autant plus qu’il lui rendait du poids… Mais on ne sait jamais ce qu’il peut se passer dans une course. Gérald Mossé lui a donné un parcours magnifique et le cheval a été courageux. Lorsqu’il prend la tête, il est dur à passer. Le Qatar Prix Dollar (Gr2) est une option. Il est aussi engagé en Turquie, mais nous allons en discuter. »

Un achat gagnant. First Sitting est un élève de Juddmonte Farms et a débuté en compétition sous cette casaque, avant de connaître les rings des ventes. Il a tout d’abord été acheté 15.000 Gns par Hambleton Racing durant la vente d’automne Tattersalls, en 2014, rejoignant les boxes de David O’Meara. First Sitting est repassé sur le ring de cette même vente en 2015, où il a été acheté par son entraîneur, Chris Wall, pour ses propriétaires, Bringloe & Clarke, moyennant 35.000 Gns. Michael Bringloe nous a dit : « À Chantilly, le terrain était trop rapide et cela ne s’est pas bien passé. C’est un cheval qui n’a pas de vraie pointe de vitesse, mais il ne fait qu’avancer, il a de la tenue à revendre et il est dur. Quand Gérald Mossé s’est porté en tête, assez tôt, nous étions très confiants. Je l’ai acheté aux ventes avec un rating de 95. Il a dû progresser de quinze livres depuis ! Honnêtement, nous étions venus ici dans l’espoir de prendre la deuxième place derrière Almanzor. »

Garlingari, mieux que l’an passé. Troisième de cette épreuve l’an passé, Garlingari améliore son classement cette année en prenant la deuxième place… Sa troisième deuxième place en trois sorties en 2017 ! Corinne Barande-Barbe nous a dit : « Il avait encore du gaz pour finir. Il a été un peu pris de vitesse au démarrage. Mais, il n’aurait jamais rattrapé le vainqueur. Pourtant c’est un cheval dur. Nous reviendrons peut-être pour le Grand Prix de Deauville (Gr2, 27 août). Cela dépendra de l’état de la piste et de sa récupération. Il avait l’air d’être bien après la course. Nous sommes très contents. »

Alignement, à revoir. Le puissant Alignement fait aussi partie des déceptions de la course, concluant dernier avec Almanzor. Le représentant de l’écurie Wertheimer & Frère s’est montré brillant durant le parcours, malgré le rythme imposé par Zafiro. Alignement venait de s’imposer dans une course à conditions à Chantilly pour sa grande rentrée. Il avait rencontré un souci de santé ayant retardé son retour en piste. Manager de l’écurie Wertheimer & Frère, Pierre-Yves Bureau nous a dit : « Il n’y a pas d’excuse. Le cheval avait l’air bien aujourd’hui. Il n’était pas facile de revenir de l’arrière aujourd’hui mais le quatrième, Subway Dancer (Shamardal) y est tout de même parvenu. C’est une deuxième course après une grande rentrée, mais je ne sais pas si cela peut être pris comme excuse. Il ne faut pas le condamner là-dessus et le revoir à la rentrée. »

Le frère d’Emulous. First Sitting a été élevé par Juddmonte Farms. C’est un fils de leur étalon, Dansili, et d’Aspiring Diva (Distant View), troisième d’un Prix Hérod (L). Au haras, elle a donné Emulous (Dansili), gagnante des Matron Stakes (Gr1), ainsi que Darling Diva (Dansili), gagnante du Critérium de Vitesse (L). Darling Diva a bien produit au haras, donnant Brooch (Empire Maker), gagnante des Ridgewood Pearl Stakes (Gr2), et Caponata (Selkirk), gagnante de Listed.

La deuxième mère, Queen of Song (His Majesty), est gagnante de Groupes aux Etats-Unis. Ces huit produits ayant couru sont tous gagnants, dont Ladyago (Northern Dancer), gagnante de Stakes aux Etats-Unis. Queen of Song est une sœur de Cormorant (His Majesty), gagnant du Jersey Derby (Gr1), des Gotham Stakes (Gr2) et des Bay Shore Stakes (Gr3). Il s’agit de la souche à l’origine de Showcasing (Oasis Dream) et de Shutter Speed (Dansili).
