LADY MACAPA S’OFFRE SON PREMIER GROUPE AVEC L’AIDE DU TERRAIN SOUPLE – à Chantilly en 2017

Quatre anglais avaient fait le déplacement pour le Qatar Prix du Petit Couvert (Gr3). Sur le papier, ce n’étaient pas des toutes premières chances, mais ils ont tout de même réussi à prendre les première, troisième et quatrième places grâce à Lady Macapa (Equiano), Fashion Queen (Aqlaam) et Kyllang Rock (Kyllachy). Ce n’est pas forcément rassurant à trois semaines du Qatar Prix de l’Abbaye de Longchamp (Gr1). Mais il ne faut pas retirer les mérites de la lauréate, Lady Macapa. La pouliche de Michael Johnson et John Law s’était imposée au niveau handicap et venait de se classer troisième de Gr3. En forme, à l’aise sur une piste assouplie par les récentes pluies et plus performante sur 1.000m, elle a décroché son premier Groupe. En revanche, il n’est pas sûr de la retrouver au départ de l’Abbaye.
Un courage à toute épreuve. Lady Macapa a vite galopé parmi les premiers, côté corde. Au passage devant les tribunes, on n’aurait pas mis une pièce sur ses chances. Elle était déjà bien accompagnée aux bras par son jockey, Luke Morris. Lorsque sa compatriote Kyllang Rock est arrivée à sa hauteur, elle paraissait dominée. Mais Lady Macapa a été très courageuse et elle est repartie pour l’emporter nettement devant Gold Vibe (Dream Ahead), premier français à l’arrivée, et Fashion Queen, auteure d’un bel effort au centre de la piste. En l’absence de Clive Cox, Luke Morris, jockey de Lady Macapa, nous a dit : « Elle a apprécié le raccourcissement de la distance et le terrain souple. C’est une très bonne sprinteuse. Elle est allée un peu tôt devant, mais s’est montrée courageuse. Je ne suis pas sûr qu’elle ait la qualité pour aller sur l’Abbaye, mais en terrain souple, cela vaudrait le coup de tenter notre chance. »
Une Listed plutôt que l’Abbaye pour Gold Vibe. Au fil de ses sorties, Gold Vibe se mue en un excellent sprinter. Dans ce Gr3, il a fait illusion après le passage devant les tribunes, mais n’a pu remonter Lady Macapa à la fin. Entraîneur de Gold Vibe, Pascal Bary nous a déclaré : « Il court très bien et fait des progrès à chaque sortie. Le cheval prend bien ses courses. Il ne va pas aller sur le Gr1 mais sera au départ du Prix de Bonneval (L) à Maisons-Laffitte, dans trois semaines. Il est très régulier, c’est un bon cheval. » À 3ans, Fashion Queen a fourni une bonne performance face à des chevaux endurcis.
Le meilleur produit de la famille. Élevée par Peter Winkworth, Lady Macapa est une fille d’Equiano, étalon de Newsells Park Stud, et de Brazilian Style (Exit to Nowhere), qui a pris deux places en trois courses. Lady Macapa est le meilleur produit de sa mère. C’est la famille de Band on the Run (Song), vainqueur de la Victoria Cup et troisième du Doncaster Mile.
