« The Stomp est extraordinaire : 4.500m et deux fois la grimpette de Compiègne : c’est le bout du monde pour lui… » Joint par téléphone quelques minutes après la victoire de son protégé dans le Prix Romati (Gr3), François Nicolle est émerveillé devant la performance du sauteur de Jean-Claude Rouget. Il faut dire qu’en plus d’être doué, The Stomp (Layman) est un cheval attachant qui répond toujours présent, à Auteuil comme à Enghien auparavant et désormais Compiègne, dont il est devenu l’un des rois. Pour preuve, ce jeudi, il a signé le doublé dans le Romati et a décroché sa troisième victoire en quatre sorties sur les obstacles du Putois. The Stomp avait gagné le Prix Romati 2017, mais c’était sur 3.800m et un parcours plus coulant. Avec la fin des travaux à Compiègne, l’épreuve a retrouvé sa distance de 4.500m et s’est courue sur un tracé plus sélectif. Pour la première fois, le cheval dépassait les 3.900m. Mais ça n’a pas dérangé The Stomp qui, en vieillissant, doit être capable de faire de plus longues distances.

Quel cœur ! The Stomp a un cœur énorme. Il l’a prouvé pour gagner ce Gr3. Attentiste en cinquième position, il a parfois sauté fort. En face, il s’est rapproché le long de la corde après le moyen open-ditch. Un peu bloqué à la corde, après la double barrière, derrière Paulougas (Turgeon) qui rétrogradait, il a progressé en dehors. Mais entre les deux dernières haies, il avait encore du terrain à refaire sur Via Dolorosa (König Shuffle) qui avait lancé la course de loin. Sur le plat, The Stomp a mis son cœur sur la piste pour revenir l’emporter dans les cinquante derniers mètres. François Nicolle nous a déclaré : « Il m’a impressionné car il revient de loin. Nous allons déjà savourer ce succès avant de décider de la suite de son programme. Mais The Stomp va pouvoir faire de plus longues distances. Il a eu un parcours de rêve, se faisant emmener dans son effort. C’est un crack cheval ! Il pourrait courir à Auteuil, nous allons réfléchir. » Le professionnel de Saint-Augustin était aussi représenté par Golden Chop (Muhaymin), cinquième, et il nous a dit : « Il court très bien mais je pense que mon jockey est venu un peu trop vite. »

Thomas Gueguen, un an après. Thomas Gueguen a remporté le premier Groupe de sa carrière dans le Prix Romati 2017 avec The Stomp. Un an plus tard, le jockey de François Nicolle a engrangé plusieurs succès prestigieux. Il nous a déclaré : « J’étais un peu inquiet durant tout le parcours car il était assez froid, timide sur ses obstacles. Je me suis senti battu assez tôt. Mais c’est un cheval qui y croit, il aime ce genre de parcours coulants et le bon terrain. C’est vraiment sa tasse de thé. Il a fallu le retendre et il a fini très vite. Il faut lui trouver des engagements sur mesure et son entourage sait le faire en le courant peu mais à bon escient. Je tiens à dire un grand bravo à toute l’équipe qui l’avait emmené dans sa robe de mariée. »

Prince Philippe sur son terrain. Malgré quelques petites fautes dans le parcours, notamment sur le fence irlandais, Via Dolorosa a longtemps fait illusion. Courageux, il n’a été battu que tout à la fin, concluant deuxième devant Prince Philippe (Denham Red) qui a de nouveau réalisé une bonne performance sur une piste à sa convenance. Son entraîneur, Philippe Bourgeais, nous a dit : « C’est un bon cheval, régulier et qui saute très bien. Il courait dans un vrai lot aujourd’hui et a fait sa valeur. C’est dommage qu’il n’ait pas pu être emmené un peu plus loin. Je ne sais pas encore quelle sera la suite de son programme. » Animateur, Tiesto d’Authie (Cachet Noir) aurait fini bien plus près sans une faute sérieuse à l’avant-dernière haie, alors qu’il avait bien sauté jusque-là.

Le meilleur élément de la famille. Élevé par le haras d’Haspel, The Stomp est le fils de Layman et de Version Originale (Poliglote), gagnante de trois courses en plat. Version Originale a aussi produit Vlatan (Slickly), troisième du Prix Christian de l’Hermite (L). Il s’agit de la famille maternelle qui a donné Superstar Leo (College Chapel), deuxième du Prix de l’Abbaye de Longchamp (Gr1). Superstar Leo est la fille de Council Rock (General Assembly), la troisième mère de The Stomp.

The Stomp avait été acheté yearling à Osarus par Jean-Claude Rouget pour 8.000 €.
