Constitué cette année de cinq partants seulement, le Prix Eugène Adam (Gr2) n’avait pas vraiment fière allure avant le départ. À l’issue de la course, ce sentiment n’a fait qu’empirer puisque l’un des chevaux en vue, le prometteur Native American (Intello), s’est fracturé un antérieur dans la phase finale et n’a pu être sauvé. Cette fin malheureuse a eu pour conséquence d’éclipser totalement le succès de Gyllen (Medaglia d’Oro).

Native American est parti en tête, l’anglais Crossed Baton (Dansili) galopant en deuxième position à son extérieur. Louis d’Or (Intello) attendait en troisième position, suivi par Gyllen, tandis que l’outsider Moonlightchampagne (Myboycharlie) fermait la marche. Ces positions n’ont guère varié jusqu’au tournant final, où Mickaël Barzalona a commencé à se rapprocher, en selle sur Gyllen. Le représentant de Godolphin a progressé à la corde, gagnant ainsi du terrain et prenant l’avantage à mi-ligne droite. Crossed Baton a tenté d’attaquer le futur lauréat, tandis que Native American ne faisait que perdre du terrain. C’est à cent mètres de l’arrivée que ce dernier est tombé, s’accidentant grièvement. Gyllen s’est imposé facilement, ralliant le poteau avec une longueur d’avance sur Crossed Baton. Louis d’Or complète le podium à une longueur trois quarts du pensionnaire de John Gosden, se montrant un peu décevant.

Une supplémentation judicieuse. Gyllen avait été supplémenté par son entourage afin de participer à ce Prix Eugène Adam. Gyllen avait déjà montré de la qualité par le passé. Vainqueur à 2ans pour ses débuts, il avait renoué avec le succès pour sa rentrée, dans une Classe 2, à Saint-Cloud. Il avait ensuite enlevé facilement le Prix François Mathet (L), en terrain très lourd, avant de conclure quatrième du Prix Noailles (Gr2). Gyllen n’avait pas recouru depuis cette première tentative au niveau Groupe et il arrivait donc avec de la fraîcheur sur ce Prix Eugène Adam. Lauréat ce dimanche sur une piste annoncée à 3,3, il prouve encore une fois qu’il va dans tous les terrains. Mickaël Barzalona le connaît par cœur puisqu’il lui a toujours été associé en six sorties. Il avait dit à son sujet, suite à sa victoire dans le Prix François Mathet : « C’est un cheval qui a un grand cœur et il a le droit de progresser encore. » Gyllen lui a donné raison et nous n’avons sûrement pas fini d’entendre parler de lui.

Crossed Baton, mieux sur plus long. Lauréat de l’Investec Blue Riband Trial (L), à Epsom, et deuxième des Hampton Court Stakes (Gr3), Crossed Baton s’est comporté honorablement pour une première sortie sur notre sol, ne semblant pas être dérangé par le rallongement de la distance. C’est un amateur de bon terrain et il a été servi ce dimanche. Le représentant de Khalid Abdullah a effectué tout son parcours nez au vent avant de fournir un effort correct à mi-ligne droite, mais il est resté dans son action. Le style de sa fin de course laisse penser qu’il sera encore mieux sur plus long, car il possède beaucoup d’action mais semble manquer un peu de vitesse. Teddy Grimthorpe, manager de Khalid Abdullah, a déclaré : « Il a bien voyagé et bien couru. C’est dommage qu’il n’ait pas pu accélérer jusqu’au bout. Mais il pourra être rallongé sur 2.400m sans problème. » Crossed Baton est engagé dans les Great Voltigeur Stakes (Gr2) à York le 22 août.

Louis d’Or pris de vitesse. Sur ses titres, Louis d’Or devait remporter ce Prix Eugène Adam. Troisième du Qipco Prix du Jockey Club (Gr1) devant Intellogent ** (Intello), lequel a gagné depuis le Prix Jean Prat (Gr1), il faisait figure de favori logique. Mais le poulain de Camille Garnier a mis un peu de temps à accélérer et il a dû se contenter de la troisième place. Son entraîneur, Tony Castanheira, nous a dit : « Il a été un peu pris de vitesse au moment du démarrage. Je suis forcément un peu déçu car nous étions venus ici pour gagner. On voit bien que lorsque les autres ont commencé à accélérer dans le tournant final, il était déjà un peu monté aux bras. Ensuite, il a accéléré correctement, mais comme les deux autres devant lui étaient déjà partis, c’était trop tard. Je vais attendre de pouvoir apprécier son état de récupération avant de décider de la suite de son programme, car le terrain était tout de même assez ferme aujourd’hui. Mais si tout se passe bien, il devrait se diriger vers le Prix Guillaume d’Ornano (Gr2), le 15 août. » Louis d’Or va donc devoir attendre un peu avant de décrocher une première victoire de Groupe.

Le neveu de Van Nistelrooy. Élevé par ses propriétaires, Godolphin, Gyllen est un fils de Medaglia d’Oro et de Miss Halory (Mr Prospector). Cette dernière a déjà donné Stormalory (Storm Cat), vainqueur de Gr3 aux États-Unis. La deuxième mère a produit Van Nistelrooy (Storm Cat), lauréat des Futurity Stakes (Gr2), deuxième des National Stakes (Gr1) et étalon. Il s’agit de la famille d’Halory Hunter (Jade Hunter), troisième du Florida Derby (Gr1).
