Knight to Behold (Sea the Stars) n’a pas tremblé dans le Prix Guillaume d’Ornano — Haras du Logis Saint-Germain (Gr2). Le représentant de L. Neil Jones s’est imposé de bout en bout. Son jockey, Oisin Murphy, a fait ce qu’il a voulu dans ce Gr2, suivant les ordres à la lettre : prendre un bon départ, mener à son rythme et repartir. Les astres se sont alignés pour le poulain qui aime dominer. Il a envoyé de loin dans le dernier tournant et a dit « bye bye » à ses adversaires. Jeu, set et match.

Derrière, Patascoy (Wootton Bassett) a pris la deuxième place à quatre longueurs après avoir évolué à mi-peloton. Gagnant du Qipco Prix du Jockey Club (Gr1), Study of Man (Deep Impact) a été tout le temps débordé et conclut troisième à deux longueurs, sans montrer son accélération habituelle. Il faut compter une longueur trois quarts pour retrouver Gyllen (Medaglia d’Oro), quatrième, avec Louis d’Or (Intello) cinquième à quatre longueurs.

Un plan parfait. La victoire de Knight to Behold n’est pas une bonne nouvelle pour les poulains de 3ans français. Le pensionnaire d’Harry Dunlop restait sur deux nets échecs dans les Derby d’Epsom et d’Irlande (Grs1). Néanmoins, ce poulain puissant a de la qualité : il avait impressionné en survolant les Derby Trial Stakes (L) à Lingfield au mois de mai. Mais il y a un gouffre entre cette Listed et les Derby. Knight to Behold était muni d’œillères australiennes pour la première fois.

Christina Dunlop, la femme d’Harry Dunlop, nous a dit : « Nous sommes vraiment très contents. Tout s’est déroulé comme nous le souhaitions. Les ordres étaient de prendre un bon départ, de mener à notre rythme pour ensuite démarrer, creuser l’écart et s’imposer avec le plus de marge possible. C’est ce qu’il s’est passé. Le lot était relevé, mais nous avions confiance en notre poulain et nous savions qu’il avait les moyens de bien faire à condition que la course se déroule comme nous l’avions prévu. Pour la suite, Harry discutera avec le propriétaire et décidera plus tard. »

Une vraie course. Knight to Behold a fait ce qu’il a voulu, mais il a eu une vraie course ce mercredi. Le poulain soufflait beaucoup à son retour au rond. Le Guillaume d’Ornano peut emmener les 3ans vers les Irish Champion Stakes, mi-septembre à Leopardstown, mais Knight to Behold n’est pas engagé dans cette épreuve et aura besoin de récupérer et de progresser encore s’il veut se diriger vers une course comme celle-là. Son jockey, Oisin Murphy, a expliqué : « Il était détendu en se rendant au départ et est sorti des stalles en étant bien dans son action. Je ne suis pas allé doucement en tête, mais à une allure régulière. Je savais qu’il garderait une poire pour la soif, mais je n’ai pas pour autant l’impression qu’on m’a offert la course sur un plateau. Je montais un très bon cheval. L’entraîneur et sa femme tout particulièrement qui s’en occupe tous les jours ont fait un travail fantastique. Je l’avais monté avant même qu’il ne débute et je l’avais beaucoup aimé. J’ai attendu longtemps avant de le remonter. Je pense qu’il a besoin de temps entre ses courses. Il a eu une course dure aujourd’hui et son entraîneur décidera pour la suite. »

Patascoy, un choix à faire entre 2.000 et 2.400 m. Patascoy n’avait pas été revu depuis sa deuxième place dans le Qipco Prix du Jockey Club. Il se comporte correctement ce mercredi, sans jamais inquiéter le gagnant. Pour l’avenir, Patascoy est engagé dans le Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe et les Champion Stakes (Grs1). Son entourage devra faire un choix entre les 2.000 et 2.400 m, sachant que la tenue du poulain n’est pas avérée.

Son entraîneur, Xavier Thomas-Demeaulte, nous a dit : « Mon pensionnaire court très bien. Il s’est passé beaucoup de temps depuis sa dernière sortie et je n’ai pas de chevaux capables d’aller avec lui le matin. Ce n’est pas donc pas facile de courir avec autant d’écart. Il réalise néanmoins une bonne performance, en étant battu par un cheval qui est allé devant. Le gagnant a été monté pour lui et il gagne très bien. Patascoy est bon deuxième et il domine nettement le reste du lot, notamment le lauréat du Qipco Prix du Jockey Club. Nous avons préféré le courir en France, car aller à l’étranger, c’est parfois hasardeux. Pour l’avenir, il est engagé dans les Champion Stakes et dans l’Arc. Sa performance du jour ne nous a pas permis d’en savoir plus sur sa tenue. Peut-être faudra-t-il le tester sur 2.400 m pour y voir plus clair. Nous allons dans un premier temps voir comment il récupère. » Si Patascoy est testé sur 2.400 m, une course comme le Qatar Prix Niel (Gr2) s’annonce comme la suite logique.

Study of Man avait besoin de courir. L’analyse de Pascal Bary concernant Study of Man est assez claire : le représentant de la famille Niarchos avait besoin de courir : « Il a couru comme un cheval rouillé. Il a fait un petit peu de fautes, 2.000 m c’est un poil court pour lui. Il a été long à trouver son action. » Study of Man a en effet été vite débordé et soufflait beaucoup à son retour aux balances. Cette sortie devrait lui faire du bien.

Du côté du clan Niarchos, on garde une totale confiance envers le poulain. Alan Cooper, qui manage les intérêts de la famille Niarchos, nous a dit : « C’était une rentrée. Il soufflait beaucoup. Stéphane a dit qu’il ne le trouvait pas à l’aise par moment pendant le parcours à cause du terrain. Nous ne sommes pas déçus pour autant. Il donne l’impression que 2.000 m, c’est un peu court pour lui. Nous allons revoir ses options. Il y a une bonne course le premier week-end d’octobre, il me semble ! Nous allons d’abord l’engager dans le Niel. » Le Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe est donc toujours au programme.

Le neveu d’un gagnant du St Leger. Élevé par son propriétaire — Neil Jones à Abergwaun Farms — Knight to Behold est le 28e gagnant de Groupe de Sea the Stars (Cape Cross). L’étalon de la famille Tsui, stationné dans le haras irlandais de Son Altesse l’Aga Khan, est en pleine forme. Avec les filles de Sadler’s Wells — reproduisant ainsi le croisement de Galileo (Sadler’s Wells × Urban Sea) — Sea the Stars a notamment donné Taghrooda (Oaks et King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Grs1, troisième de l’Arc), Storm the Stars (troisième des Derby d’Irlande et d’Angleterre, Grs1) et Almodovar (deuxième du Churchill Coolmore Prix d’Ispahan, Gr1).

Angel of the Gwaun (Sadler’s Wells), la mère de Knight to Behold, n’a pas couru. Ses six produits vus en piste ont tous gagné. Quatre ont décroché du caractère gras. Cosmo Meadow (King’s Best) a gagné les Diamond Stakes (Gr3) à Tokyo, Beauty O’ Gwaun (Rainbow Quest) s’est imposée dans les Blue Wind Stakes (Gr3) à Naas et Angelonmyshoulder (King’s Best) est placée au niveau Listed outre-Atlantique. Trois des quatre black types d’Angel of the Gwaun sont donc les produits d’étalons de la famille d’Allegretta (mère de King’s Best et deuxième mère de Sea the Stars). La deuxième mère a produit quatre black types dont Let the Lion Roar (Sadler’s Wells), troisième du Derby d’Epsom (Gr1) et Millenary (Rainbow Quest), lauréat du St Leger (Gr1), mais aussi sur le podium du St Leger d’Irlande, de l’Aral Pokal et de la Coronation Cup (Grs1).
