GOLD FILLY BECOMES THE QUEEN OF THE 3YO FILLIES

Wednesday 14 June 2017 - Auteuil - Gr3

Gold Filly (Martaline) won the Prix Sagan (Gr3), Wednesday at Auteuil. The Thierry Cyprès and Philippe Peltier filly became the prom queen. Shed id not leave a chance to Whetstone (Saint des Saints) on the flat when she accelerated. Winner of the Prix Géographie and second of the Prix Girofla over 3,000m, she preferred the step up in trip. Her connections had also decided not to race her in the Prix d’Iéna (L), so her freshness added to her class, paid off. After cantering in the second half of the field, she travelled along the rail in the straight in front, stopping a bit over the second last fence on that side. However, she continued progressing. Between the two last fences, she attacked Whetstone and her jockey, Johnny Charron, placed her against the stand’s grid. A strategic choice because Golf Filly was able to take a clear advantage over Whetstone, on her own in the middle of the track, to win by two lengths.

An unusual filly. Gold Filly came out of the lot, and this way before she even started her career, she only confirme dit. Her trainer, Philippe Peltier, told us: “Her jockey rode him perfectly. We did it on purpose not to run the Prix d’Iéna because it was too close to her previous race. We wanted to protect her. There was pace and Gold Filly ran away. The best is to come, she has everything for her and will do the steeple as well. She is an unusual filly, just like the second one. Today, she did a thing she had never done lately. The step up in trip helped her, the best one won. In her family, they go in heavy ground, it should not be a problem. For the autumn season, we can think at the Prix Bournosienne (Gr3) at least, if not better.”

A first group for the colours of Thierry Cyprès. Thierry Cyprès signed his first Group success with his colours. Very touched of winning this Gr3 with Gold Filly, and with Philippe Peltier, with whom he has been working for several years, he told us: “It is wonderful! It is the result of a long work. It is via Philippe [Peltier, ndlr] that we could get Thou in Gold. We have worked with him for years. We trust each other. I would have never sold Gold Filly. We had bought Thou in Gold when she stopped her racing career. She was an exceptional mare. She went to Sholokhov, which gave Goldkhov. Then, she had a 2yo colt by Vision d’État, called View Gold, a female yearling called Thou Gris by Gris de Gris. She is currently full of MArtaline. Gold Filly always distinguished herself and her trainer always liked her. She had been presented at David Lumet’s show last summer.”

Whetstone completes a double success for a good family. Behind the daughter of the cross-country champion Thou in Gold (Gold and Steel), Whetstone, sister of champions such as So French (Poliglote) and Device (Poliglote), finished second. The filly came closer to the lead earlier than she is used to and entered the home straight in front. She seemed to be able to win the race, but on the flat, she leaned on her left-hand side when she was on her own in the middle of the track. And she was bothered by Ellen des Mottes’ (Maresca Sorrento) fall at the second last fence. Her second place does not tarnish her talent because she is a filly with a great future, just like the winner. Representing Magalen Bryant, who leases Whetstone from Benoît Gabeur, David Powell told us: “Ellen des Mottes’s fall costs her the success because she ended up in front too early. And she was lost all by herself with no rail to help her. With the rail, she would have gained two lengths and would have won. And the ground was quite fast. She will be better on a softer kind of ground. I don’t understand why we don’t water anymore at Auteuil. With hot weather like this and light ground, it is not normal.”

Recent winner at Auteuil, Elimay (Montmartre) succeeded for her first foot on the Groups path, by taking the third place, ten lengths from Whetstone. She came in front of Santa Adelia  (Smadoun), last for a while and who finished honourably. The Robert Waley-Cohen owned filly will be better on a softer ground.
