Prix JUIGNÉ
DE BON CŒUR IS PURRING
Sunday 04 March 2018 - AUTEUIL - Gr3

It was a healthy walk, an absolute joy for the eyes. The first Group of the season in Auteuil became the theatre for the demonstration of De Bon Cœur (Vision d’État). The representative of Jacques Détré and the haras de Saint-Voir wandered through this Prix Juigné (Gr3). First amongst the first, she took the lead in front of the stands. We used to see De Bon Cœur take the lead, unwind and break away from her rivals. On Sunday, she led but did not detach herself from the rest of the field, while staying calm and focused. With her ears pointed, De Bon Cœur flew over every fence. Between the last two hurdles, she had won the race. It was just a matter of securing the last one, which she did, before running to the post without passing a single gear and winning by ten lengths.
Galop Marin (Black Sam Bellamy) won the second race. He was always seen among the first ones. The great Alti Plano (Nickname) is third three lengths behind. Last for a while, Device (Poliglote) finished well but too late, after showing himself very cold during the race.
Good omen for the future. The quality of De Bon Cœur was no longer to be proved and her engine is well-known. But this Prix Juigné was announced as rich in lessons for the rest of her career, from a mental and behavioural point of view. We have known De Bon Cœur as a steamroller, sometimes going off and careless in her jumps. This Sunday, we discovered a De Bon Coeur in very good physical condition but above all, more laid back, at work, which is a very good sign because the longer the time goes by, the longer the distances will be.
Before walking back to meet De Bon Cœur, François Nicolle told us : “I am feeling better! We are always a little stressed when we have such horses on the track… Before the race, I was a little worried because she was really very calm in the paddock, less awake than before. I thought to myself, “she’s a not tonic!” She was just relaxed, and it was the case on the track. Today, she went in front, and showed that she is able to bear the fact that competitors are cantering alongside her. It’s a really good sign for the future and the further distance… We’ll see how she recovers, but she did a good race! She could run all the prep-races to the Grande Course de Haies d’Auteuil, we’ll think about it.”
De Bon Cœur was ridden by Thomas Gueguen, who replaced James Reveley, who fell on Saturday at Fontainebleau. François Nicolle said: “It was a double-edge ride for Thomas today because if things went wrong, it could have fallen back on him. But he rode her perfectly. He knows her by heart, he rides her every morning.”
Who can worry her? After this Prix Juigné, we can ask ourselves who can worry De Bon Cœur this year over hurdles at Auteuil, apart from herself. However, there is some opposition amongst the older hurdlers: Device will be better on a longer distance. Alex de Larredya (Crillon), his training companion, is not to forget either… And there is the possibility of Anglo-Irish landings for the Grande Course de Haies ! François Nicolle told us: “Thomas could have kept her even longer in the lead today. The British and Irish may be worrying us, but given her way of doing things today, they might as well take her to the end of the world…”
Galop Marin on his Pau performance. Galop Marin wins the second race, behind the untouchable De Bon Cœur. The representative of the Papot family arrived on this Prix Juigné ready since he ran twice in Pau during the winter, including a fourth place in the Grand Prix de Pau – Biraben Foie Gras – Prix André Labarrère (Gr3). Winner of the Prix Léon Olry-Roederer (Gr2) in November 2017, he is a class horse and this Sunday he found quite a soft track for his capacities. His trainer, Dominique Bressou, told us: “His races in Pau brought him well for this event. The longer distance next time will be good for him, but he would need 4.400m in heavy ground. And as we move forward in time, the ground will become lighter. We will also have to see how he behaves against Alex de Larredya.”
Alti Plano will be better on longer. Tall and nice horse, Alti Plano stayed on a close third place in the Grande Course de Haies de Pau (L). Still very new, he behaved very well in this Prix Juigné against these quality horses. He wore Australian blonkiers for the first time and the end of his race was quite pleasing.
Alti Plano has the means to prove himself fully this year, even facing older hurdlers of the highest level. Alain Couétil, his trainer, told us: “He’s a good horse. As usual, he finished strongly. In Pau, he was not at ease and the home straight of Auteuil favoured him. He can still improve. We’re going to make him run on a longer distance because it was a little short for him.”
Device not on his distance. Over the years, Guillaume Macaire had a tendency to say that Device was becoming more and more philosophical. Magalen Bryant’s representative was indeed very cold in this Prix Juigné. For a long time, he was even reprimanded by Bertrand Lestrade after the last hurdle of the opposite straight. Device carried 71 kilos – like Galop Marin – where De Bon Cœur carried 65 kilos. It is not the weight alone that explains the gap in the finish. This Prix Juigné will help Device to get in better condition and the horse will be much better on longer, even on the big jumps. His trainer, Guillaume Macaire, told us: “Device was caught for speed over this distance. The next prep-race will be over 3,900m, but it won’t be long enough either. He’d need a lot more distance. We could start him off in steeple, we’ll think about it.”
