Prix de BARBEVILLE

FUNNY KID BECAME A STAYER OF CLASS

Sunday 29 April 2018 - LONGCHAMP - Gr3

00134828-017-scoopdyga

These past months, Funny Kid (Lemon Drop Kid) kept progressing in order to win the Prix de Barbeville (Gr3) on Sunday. The Wertheimer & Frère colt started his career with André Fabre, winning both his two first starts. He was then sent to Christophe Ferland after his third race. Going through handicaps and even a claiming race, he revealed himself over the winter. Qualified for the All-Weather Championship after his second place at Wolverhampton, he clearly won his finale over 3,200m at Lingfield. But he did not stop there, winning his first Gr3. Simply a bit late, he is getting to his best at 5yos. We can’t give him the title of best French stayer, which is owned by Vazirabad (Manduro). But he will certainly be one of the challengers of His Higness the Aga Khan’s champion in the upcoming months.

A late horse. Funny Kid had a perfect race, hidden in sixth position. He was asked progressively by his jockey Maxime Guyon to go as from the Pavilion. Only ridden with the hands, Funny Kid finished fast to win by little but surely. His trainer, Christophe Ferland, told us: “He is a very good horse with such a turn of foot over this distance and it made a difference. He was hard-fit for Lingfield, having run in the qualifier, so I didn’t have to do a great deal with him. He has benefited from time and hasn’t stopped progressing into a very good horse. We’d know if Ferland was better than Fabre! Funny Kid was very late and I had the time for me. I haven’t invented everything.”

Good return for Doha Dream. Doha Dream (Shamardal) also had a good race, in third position. He resisted well to Funny Kid, losing by nothing, for his comeback. Al Shaqab Racing’s representative owner of Doha Dream, Rupert Pritchard Gordon, told us: “Doha Dream did a very good return. He accelerated well. They started from far and he finished very well. He also carried some weight. The winner had already run twice, so it is a very good performance. The three best horses were placed at the three first places. It is encouraging for the rest of the season.”

Promising return for Ice Breeze. Winner of the Prix Royal-Oak (Gr1), Ice Breeze (Nayef) was the attraction of the race. After waiting amongst the last horses, he did a nice end of race to come third. Clearly, he finished in the best way. His trainer, Pascal Bary, said: “It is a good return. He carried a lot of weight in this race and finishes well. It is positive. He will now race the Vicomtesse Vigier.”
