int(169) string(20) "bertrand-de-tarragon"

Saturday 22 September 2018 - Maisons-Laffitte - Gr3

There was suspense on the finish of this Prix Bertrand de Tarragon (Gr3). Indeed, the future winner, My Sister Nat (Acclamation) and the “Aga Khan” Shahnaza (Azamour) fought a merciless war in the home straight, making each other blow in and blow out of each other. An enquiry was opened straight after by the stewards, and the winner’s connections held their breath for many minutes. However, the finish was maintained, and My Sister Nat finally won a well-deserved first Group.

A true wrestling match in the home straight. The race took place at a rather steady pace. As usual, Hadith (New Approach) took over the commands, with the favourite Expressiy (Siyouni) galloping outside. My Sister Nat, on the other hand, long cantered in fifth position along the inside rail. Coming 400m from the post in the middle of the field, the Gemini Stud filly found herself in contact several times with Shahnaza who was trying to progress in the same place. The two fillies fought each other fiercely for 200m, to such an extent that there was not really a spirit of open camaraderie between their two jockeys. My Sister Nat finally took the lead with 200m to go, winning by a length and a quarter in front of Awesometank (Intense Focus), a good overall finisher. Shahnaza completes the podium with William Haggas’ horse leading the way. Absent since her attempt in the Prix Saint-Alary (Gr1), Tosen Gift (Lope de Vega) made a good start to the season by placing fourth, in front of Hadith.

Next aim, a Gr1 in the United States. Beaten by a nose in the Prix Chloé (Gr3) by Crown Walk (Dubawi), My Sister Nat then finished third in the Shadwell Prix de la Nonette (Gr2). His trainer, Francis-Henri Graffard, told us: “My Sister Nat is a good ground filly. In the Shadwell Prix de la Nonette (Gr2), she came into a portion of the track that was hashed and paid for it at the end. So we were a little disappointed. We then said to ourselves that we were going to aim for that race, and I am very happy that she has finally won her Group. She had to reassure us today, and the trail became more flexible, which was not in her favour. We wanted to have pace, and that was the case. She is a mare with a real ability to accelerate. I think she is a good filly and she has fulfilled her goal. We still preserved her by spacing her races and I think she has the potential of a Gr1 filly. We may try our luck in the United States… The E.P. Taylor Stakes (Gr1) is a tempting option, as are the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (Gr1) in Keeneland, if she is invited. She is entered in the Prix de l’Opéra Longines (Gr1), but this will come too quickly and the ground should not get heavier.”

An ideal distance for her. Pierre-Charles Boudot, jockey of the winner, told Equidia : “I am very happy to have won, because the filly disappointed me last time. I think she was in a day without. Today, she has finally won her Group. We always valued her at the stable. I think she’ll be able to return to 2,000 meters, but not beyond that. The 1,800m is a good distance for her, unfortunately we have very few races on this intermediate distance.”

Firs successful run in France for Awesome Tank. Winner of the Coral Distaff (L) and second of the Atalanta Stakes (Gr3) at Sandown, Awesome Tank was running for the first time on our ground this Saturday. Well out she waited a long time in fourth position before coming on the front line at the end of the final turn. She then seemed stuck with 300m to go, then she pulled herself together to take second place at the very end. Awesome Tank has only good performances this year and should soon win her first Group. She is entered in the Kingdom of Barhain Sun Chariot Stakes (Gr1), on October 6th in Newmarket.

It was not Shahnaza’s day. Winner of the Prix de la Seine (L) in the spring, Shahnaza had just finished third of the Prix de Liancourt (L) for his return. Ridden in last position, she was unlucky in the home straight, like we wrote higher. The filly did not place her turn of foot when everybody accelerated at the end and lost the second place near the post. Her trainer, Alain de Royer Dupré, was very laconic about his filly’s performance: “She was stopped in the straight. She was bumped hard and didn’t get back into the race afterwards.” The filly has several entries during the Arc de Triomphe weekend.

The Monceaux’ form. Out of the écurie des Monceaux, My Sister Nat is therefore the result of a healthy breeding. This year, the Monceaux have given the triple winner of Grs1 Sistercharlie (Myboycharlie), but also Magic Wand (second in Vermeille), Wind Chimes (second in the Prix du Moulin de Longchamp and third in the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches, Grs1), Intellogent (Prix Jean Prat, Gr1)…
